In this 4-day class we'll have time to make a one-of-a-kind
sculpted face, hands, body armature, boots or shoes, and the finished
body complete with a body suit (or, as I call it in my kids classes:
Underwear).
The most critical part of the class will be:
Faces and Proportions: Have your ever sculpted a head that you were quite pleased with, but then
got the body proportions so wrong that when you put the character together it
looked awkward and clumsy? Need some help in putting it all together? If so, this class is for you.
Pictured are two of Maureen's St. Nicholas figures, but you can make any
type of character doll that you like. The process is the same.
The class will concentrate on: (1) Building a proportional
armature, and (2) sculpting a realistic - yet still full of personality
- face. Both of these
elements are necessary for making a St. Nicholas figure that tups on the
heartstrings.
The figures in this class will be clay with wire and fabric-wrapped
armatures. They can vary in size according to each individual
student's plans.
There will not be time in class for sewing and
dressing the figures, but demonstrations of using and altering patterns
will be included.
The characters can be dressed with fabric
clothing at home or, for a more stylized doll, can be wrapped in an expressive style at the
workshop.
