/x-tad-bigger>Personal Shamanic
Objects and Figures in Imitative Polymer Clay and Mixed Media
/x-tad-bigger>
/bigger>/bigger>/x-tad-bigger>/color>/fontfamily>
Come on. You know you’ve got one. Or many.
Where’s your wild thing? Hmm? What does it look like? Want to share?
In this fun, fast-paced three-day class, you’ll create a shamanic figure
and several totem beads and objects. Each combines imitative techniques
and mixed media.
You’ll learn
- Basics of Tory’s imitative techniques:
recreating ivory, turquoise, jade, coral, and more
- How to combine polymer clays and different media, like metals, fibers,
wood, stone, and glass
- Surface techniques like carving and scribing
- Surface approaches like painting and drawing
- Attachment techniques like tying, sewing, wrapping and binding
- More attachments, like drilling, cutting, pinning, riveting, and
gluing
- Simple rattles for wild things that make noise
- Playful and functional uses of wire
- Introductory design concepts for mixed media
- Some exercises for loosening up that inner shaman
In this three-day class, with a minimum of fuss and a maximum of
exuberance, we will let these Wild Things come out and play, by giving
them some forms to inhabit. Come join the party!

MORE about SHAMANS
/x-tad-bigger>/bigger>
/x-tad-bigger>/bigger>/color>/fontfamily>
We’ve all got wild creatures living inside us, potent,
interconnected, a little uncontrollable. We have whole vast
ecosystems of Wild Life within, happily foraging, roaming and
rutting all across our inner landscapes. Golly. We are worlds
within worlds.
Traditionally, a shaman moves between the
worlds, integrating, translating, asking and receiving, on
behalf of us. It is our nature to do this within ourselves, and
to enjoy and benefit
from the process. Wild things are the aspects of ourselves that
express and integrate all of
who we are, not just the
well-behaved visible parts. /x-tad-bigger>/bigger>/color>/fontfamily>

A Message From Tory:
/x-tad-bigger>/bigger>/bigger>
Materials note:
Our wild inner life is often corralled by outside forces into doing
things unlike our basic natures. However, this class is all about
/x-tad-bigger>your wild inner life/x-tad-bigger>,
a very personal and intuitive class: bring what you personally like to
use and experiment with. I can help you integrate whatever you bring,
and use /make sense of it in a piece
/x-tad-bigger>/bigger>/bigger>
Polymer clays (not Sculpey) I find both versions of Fimo work
about the same, so whatever you have is juuuuust right. I have
given the name of the Fimo color below, and then an approximate
description of the color, if you are using another brand.
Note: Maureen has all of these clays in stock in case you'd like to
purchase them during class..
1 brick (12-16 oz, depending on brand) Translucent Fimo
1/2 brick Translucent Premo
( I use Fimo and Premo both, in the same
piece, for different effects. I find that the 014 Translucent Fimo
Classic is every bit as translucent and effective as the old Fimo 00. Go
for it.
1/2 brick White
1 block each (2 oz.):
peppermint ( a light turquoise)
sunflower (a warm yellow)
sahara (a medium light beige)
black
emerald ( a medium teal-green)
(bright green)
purple-violet (or some purple)
bordeaux ( a deep winey red)
marine blue ( a classic dark rich blue. or some kind of cobalt blue)
other colors you like; you may want some pearlescent Premo, for
instance, or some glitter Fimo. Bring them.
Other materials:
Miscellaneous mixed media
Small collection of fibers such as fabric, snakeskin, lace, yarns, odd
stuff that you have gathered. Think wrapping, hinging, binding...
Earths, spices, meaningfull materials and media. You can mix anything
into the polymer....
Things you like that you don't know what to do with but think are
interesting. This may include feathers, rusted metal, broken jewelry,
odd stones, old ephemera, images, text, and all that.
Anything is good, just remember that most of it will need to fit in your
suitcase and/or in the oven, so keep them on the small side. The more
personal, the better. Those things you can't even explain why you like
them, what about them interests or pleases you, but they do. Totems of
your life....
Acrylic paint, in tubes, not in those squeeze bottles: you don't need
much, share with a friend. NOTE: If you don't have any on hand, you can
share Maureen's.
