Rock'n Roll

If you love the shape and texture and color of rocks, then you will enjoy this class.

The secret is to mix colors of clay and then blend it onto a rock in such a way that it looks as though the rock itself has been sculpted.

Bring a rock from home or come early and search for one on the banks of Sand Creek, which flows by just outside the classroom door.

Basic instruction will be given in sculpting with polymer clay to create faces and shapes.  This is a perfect class for the beginning sculptor as there is lots of leeway for learning, mistakes, imperfections, etc.  After all, you want it to look like a rock!

Painting technqiues for making the clay look even more like the rock will also be explored.

Supplies needed for class

Also bring

* One or more rocks.  Choose rocks which are small enough to be lifted with one hand.

* Polymer clay, any brand, in a selection of colors which are included in your rock.  We will be mixing colors to get a blend that matches your rock.  There will also be clay available for purchase at Maureen's.  The exact amount of clay will depend on how large of a sculpture you intend to create.

* Plastic bags for leftover clay

* Paring knife or utility knife

* Knitting needles in a variety of sizes, including one that is a size 6, 7 or 8 (There are some at Maureen's for group use)

* Small artist paintbrushes for blending clay, various sizes and shapes. Note: if you are choosing one brush, get a size 4 - 8 filbert brush.

* Favorite sculpting tools, if you have them

* Photos or pictures of a person, animal or characters that appeal to you - which just "might" be the sculpture that is coming out of your rock.

* A box for taking home your finished rock

* Paper towels or hand towel

* Non-alcohol hand wipes

All items on this list are optional:

Things to show what you have been making - or want to make.  Photos are OK.
