 Class Description:    Details

What's do you see in that piece of wood?
What images are almost there, but not quite?
What does that bump or dip suggest and what might they be turned into?

These are all questions that we'll ask - and answer - as we add polymer clay to wood to turn it into a wood and clay sculpture.  The clay can be mixed so that the color resembles that of the wood, or it can be colorful, such as Maureen's Talking Stick, below.

Basic instruction will be given in sculpting polymer clay to create faces, feet and/or hands.  There will also be basic instruction in creating patterns if you choose to use colorful clays.

Supplies needed for class

Also bring

* One or more pieces of driftwood or a small branch or chunk of wood.  Choose pieces which are small enough to be lifted with one hand.

* Polymer clay, any brand, in a selection of colors which are included in your piece of wood.  If you want to cover the wood with colored patterns, bring clay colors that you like.  We will be mixing colors to get a blend that matches the wood as well as learning some simple millefiori patterns.  There will also be clay available for purchase at Maureen's.  The exact amount of clay will depend on how large of a sculpture you intend to create.

* Paring knife or utility knife

* Knitting needles in a variety of sizes, including one that is a size 6, 7 or 8 (There are some at Maureen's for group use)

* Small artist paintbrushes for blending clay, various sizes and shapes. Note: if you are choosing one brush, get a size 4 - 8 filbert brush.

* Favorite sculpting tools, if you have them

* A box for taking home your finished rock

* Paper towels or hand towel

* Non-alcohol hand wipes

* Plastic bags for leftover clay

* Photos or pictures of a person, animal or characters that appeal to you - which just "might" be the sculpture that is coming out of your piece of wood..
