Some people record their stories in written form.
Others use photo albums or scrapbooks. Still others hang their
stories on the wall in the form of framed photos.
In this class, we
will do all of the above - but not in the traditional way.
The finished project in this class will be a wooden box. But it
won't be just any old box. It will be a vehicle for telling your
story through symbols, images and words.
Each box will be unique. Time will be given in class to develop a
theme and symbols which are personal to you and your story. The
boxes will then be embellished with polymer clay, paper, fiber, beads,
and paint - plus found objects, keepsakes, mementoes, photos - you name
it!
The finished boxes can be hung on the wall or developed as a standing
piece.
Skills learned will vary from sculpting and
painting techniques to decoupage and collage.

This box is
titled:
Playing it Safe
I
made it during a time when I was struggling
especially hard with the stress of perfectionism.
Seems that I never learned the value of failing - of
struggling on even if I'm not good at what I'm doing.
So, to feel successful, I usually did only those things
that were somewhat easy for me to do. Thus the
title: Playing it Safe. |
Making this box, and getting my thoughts out there in a
visible form, gave me a vehicle with which to have a
conversation with myself and with others about the
feelings involved in perfectionism. It feels to me
that making the box has been one of the
important steps in my journey towards wholeness.
