Colors, Canes, Kaleidoscopes....Bracelets!

Sarah says:

Let colors be your inspiration! Choose a color scheme based on something that you love...a painting, nature, or an idea. These colors will be developed into blended sheets of polymer clay that capture the tone, mood and hues of your inspirational piece.

We'll build one or two canes with interlocking repeat patterns that feature a simple but intriguing  illusion of depth. I'll guide you through my "Kaleidoscoping" techniques that highlight the unique intricacies within your individual canes - a process with an alchemy all of it's own. From the rich repertoire of the newly developed canes we'll build beads that fit together to form a bracelet and work through the finishing techniques that really make your pieces special.

Day one- Painterly Skinner Blends:
build one or two blocks of skinner blended sheets that reflect the tone, mood and hues of the inspirational piece.

Day  two- Construction of an Intricate Interlocking Cane and Kaleidoscoping techniques:
Following a few step by step patterns, construct one or several Interlocking canes using the blended blocks of clay.  Kaleidoscope these canes into an array of new patterns and begin to build beads.

Day three- Developing finished beads
Construct bracelet beads that will be finished (sanded), drilled and strung for a final piece.

Sarah says:

Bring a picture of your color inspiration and let it be your guide for choosing your colors.

As a general guideline use *1, 2  or 3 small pkgs each of at least 4 different colors of polymer clay with strong contrast in value (ie. light/dark),  plus 1 sm. package of black and 1 or 2 of white or ivory if not already included in your color selections.

I personally prefer FIMO classic but I have seen all brands of clay work so if you have a strong preference bring what you prefer. Here is my list of preference in descending order FIMO classic, KATO, FIMO soft, and PREMO. I know there are a few new brands out there that are not on this list, but I have seen less of their performance, so I haven’t rated them.

When choosing colors be aware that very dark colors like deep blues and reds will have a strong influence on your blend so it is helpful to have higher quantities of  the lighter colors like white, yellow, off white, very pale blue etc. So for example you might bring….1 dk blue (dk), 2 turquoise (med) 2 yellow
( light), and 2 white (very light)…. Or, 1 burgundy, 2 red, 2 yellow and 3 Ivory.

You can also choose colors from different hue families,  (ie dark blue, pink and white  or purple, yellow and ivory), but remember, we will be blending colors so blue clay blended into yellow clay will also give you a whole array of greens. And similarly purple clay blended into yellow will give you variations that include a number of browns…Think about the color wheel and things like whether you want warm tones or cool tones… Don’t worry about it if you don’t already have an understanding of the formal qualities of color because the clay is very  forgiving and I guarantee that what ever you come up with will be wonderful!

I find it’s always helpful to have more clay processed and available than you’ll really need so you will have the option to make or shift your color choices as you go.
