Ever
try to pray or meditate only to find your mind wandering and your
thoughts losing their focus? One method for staying on track with your
intentions is to use a set of beads which are organized in specific
patterns or repetitions.
This
is certainly not a new idea, as historical research shows that we humans
have been using beads or knotted ropes in this way for centuries.
For example, Roman Catholics have the rosary; Hindus and Buddhists use
the mala, and Muslims have the misbaha.
But
have you ever thought about what patterns, symbols or colors you might
choose if you had never heard of one of these practices? What
patterns or repetitions would you use? And what might you call
them?
In this class we'll first explore these ideas, then, using polymer clay,
wire, fibers and paper, we'll each create a set of personalized beads to
accompany our own private prayer or meditation practice.
Techniques will be simple, and easy to learn, and will combine beauty
with symbolism to create a powerful tool for your personal use.
