  Classes and Storyclay Telling
In Maryland with Maureen Carlson
    February 23 through 25, 2007

Sponsored by the Central Maryland Polymer Clay Guild and Crafter's Cafe

First: An Evening of Storyclay™ Telling  with Maureen

Join Maureen Carlson, author of Fairies, Gnomes and Trolls and Clay Characters for Kids, for a magic evening of fun, laughter and imagination.   Under Maureen’s guidance (and with our imaginary storytelling hats firmly in place), the group will build a story in thought and clay.  At the end of an hour, there, sitting in front of us, will be the title character, imagined by you and created by Maureen.    Someone from the group will then be the lucky recipient of this whimsical little person.

If you’d like more information about Maureen and her work, go to http://www.maureencarlson.com

A question and answer session concerning Maureen’s 30-year career with polymer clay will follow the Storyclay event.

#1. Saturday, Feb 24 - Wall Faces/Masks

Learn to sculpt a face with Maureen Carlson, author of How to Make Clay Characters, Family and Friends in Polymer Clay and the recently published Fairies, Gnomes and Trolls.  Create a Wall Face or Mask to hang either inside your house or outside on your garden gate.  In either place, these character faces will surely add a touch of warmth and charm to the area.  The faces are designed not to wear, but to give personality to your environment.

These approximately 6-10-inch faces can be whimsical, realistic or from your far-out imagination.  You don’t need any previous face sculpting experience, as Maureen will show the step-by-step process for putting a face together, starting with the foil and wire armature.  If you have previous sculpting experience, then come prepared to ask questions and to learn little details which will sharpen your clay sculpting skills.

Polymer clay is quite safe outside, though it will fade if placed in direct sunlight, and, if left unsealed, it may develop a freckled appearance somewhat like that of old weathered wood. Maureen has a clay ogre face which has been hanging outside her Center for Creative Arts classroom for several years - summer and winter.

So come prepared to have fun as you bring to “life” your very own clay character.

#2. Sunday, Feb. 25 - Dolls on the Wall - Alter Ego Dolls
Taught by Maureen Carlson in Maryland.

Class Description:

The dictionary defines alter ego as: (1). Another side of oneself. (2) An intimate friend; constant companion.

Do you ever wish you had the opportunity to "meet" one of your alter egos? Here's the opportunity to do so - at least in doll form! Join Maureen Carlson as she shares her techniques for creating a one-of-a-kind, 12-inch tall art doll to hang on the wall.  Class begins with a fast-paced, humorous exercise in which each participant selects one of their alter egos to explore. Following this group process, each student will choose from a handout on body shapes one pattern which best fits their alter ego’s personality and attitude.

Instruction will be given on creating a basic profile face, hands, shoes and hats – as well as accessories – from polymer clay.  These will then be baked and attached to the wire armature.  Next the body will be covered with fibers, yarn, fabric, beads, wires and buttons of the student’s choice.   Techniques for finishing the dolls will include painting, wrapping, gluing and sewing. Energy and personality, rather than realistic perfection, are the trademarks of these very personal dolls.
