Maureen Carlson has been telling stories about her characters ever since
the mid 1980's when patrons at the Minnesota Renaissance Festival began
asking for stories about her clay figures. What began as a bit of
fun during clay demonstrations turned into a whole career in Storyclay
Telling and licensed collectible characters, including the Pippsywoggins,
each of which has a story to go with the resin figurine:
.
In this class, Maureen
will demonstrate her process of character development, then she'll help
each participant develop his or her own characters and a story to go
with them. Paper and pencil will go hand-in-hand with clay in this
fast-paced class.
Participants are welcome
to bring previously developed storylines and characters.
No previous experience
is necessary, though some experience with clay is helpful in most
accurately bringing a vision to life. Students should expect to
refine the characters after they return to their own studios, as the
in-class work will be more like mock-ups of what the characters will
become. This is especially true if more than one character is being
developed.
This class will be repeated in class
MC13
in September. The September class is intended for people with some
clay experience so that less time will need to be spent on basic clay
instruction.
The September class is a 5-day
class, and could also be a follow-up class to this March 9 - 11 class.
